When I picked up The Paddock Club, I expected a Formula 1 romance. What I didn't expect was to spend half the book looking up designer fashion, getting invested in chess, and pausing more than once because a scene about family or grief hit harder than I was expecting.

Before the story even begins, Madge includes a letter to the reader explaining where the idea for The Paddock Club came from. I always appreciate when authors include little insights like this because it makes the story feel even more personal. Knowing that Madge is passionate about fashion immediately made me curious to see how much of that love would find its way into the characters, and by the end of the book, it absolutely does. It also made me even more excited for the opportunity to interview her and hear more about the inspiration behind the story later this summer.

One of the first things I noticed while reading was how thoughtfully the book is put together. Each chapter has its own icon, and every location is clearly labeled. In a story that travels from race to race and city to city, those little details make it incredibly easy to stay grounded. It's a small touch, but one I really appreciated.

Without giving too much away, The Paddock Club follows Cat, a woman with a very unconventional career who finds herself entering the world of Formula 1 with a plan of her own. Along the way, she meets championship driver Faust, and what starts as a mission quickly becomes much more complicated.

If you're looking for a romance set in the world of Formula 1, I think this book strikes a nice balance. The sport feels like an important part of the story rather than just a backdrop. Race weekends, media responsibilities, team dynamics, and life around the paddock all help shape the world without overwhelming readers who might not already follow the sport. As someone who watches Formula 1 every race weekend, I appreciated that it felt familiar while still remaining accessible for romance readers who may be stepping into this world for the first time.

One surprise for me was just how much fashion influences the story. I knew it would play a role, but I wasn't expecting to find myself constantly pausing to Google handbags, designer brands, and runway looks so I could picture everything being described. The fashion doesn't just exist for aesthetics; it becomes part of the storyline and helps define the characters and the glamorous world they move through. If you're someone who loves luxury fashion, I think you'll have a lot of fun with this.

And then there's Faust.

I'll keep this spoiler-free, but it's easy to see why so many readers can fall for him. His perspective is woven into the story in a way that adds another layer to the romance, and watching the relationship develop was one of my favorite parts of the book. The chemistry between him and Cat builds naturally, mixing playful banter with plenty of emotional tension. There were multiple moments where I found myself laughing out loud before immediately becoming invested in what was going to happen next.

What surprised me most, though, was that beneath the Formula 1, the fashion, and the romance is a story that spends a lot of time exploring grief, family, and healing. I laughed a lot while reading this book, but I also cried more than once. There were scenes that reminded me how something as ordinary as a color, a place, or even an empty chair can suddenly bring someone you love rushing back into your mind. Those quieter moments hit me the hardest, and as I sit here editing this review, I'm honestly tearing up all over again thinking about them. They gave the story an emotional depth I wasn't expecting, and ended up being some of the moments that stayed with me long after I finished the book.

I also appreciated that the book isn't afraid to touch on bigger conversations happening outside the paddock. Without becoming heavy-handed, it explores topics like wealth, privilege, and healthcare in ways that give Cat's motivations more weight. Those themes help the story feel grounded while still delivering everything you'd want from a romance.

One thing I also have to mention is the communication between the characters. While the romance certainly gets steamy as the story progresses, I appreciated that the relationship never felt like it relied solely on physical attraction. Conversations, trust, and learning about one another remain at the center of their connection, which made me more invested in them as a couple.

My biggest criticism is that I would have liked to see a little more development from one of the central conflicts introduced early in the book with Bernard. The setup had so much potential that I found myself wanting a bit more time with it before the story naturally shifted its focus elsewhere. That said, I was so invested in Cat and Faust by that point that it didn't take away much from my overall enjoyment.

By the time I reached the final chapters, I realized this wasn't just an F1 romance. It's a story about learning to trust people, carrying grief with you instead of trying to outrun it, and discovering that sometimes the life you never planned for ends up being exactly where you're meant to be.

If you're an F1 fan who's been looking for a romance that actually embraces the world of motorsport, I think you'll enjoy this one. And if you're a romance reader who's curious about Formula 1 but doesn't know where to start, The Paddock Club is an easy recommendation because the racing never feels intimidating.

Final Rating: 4/5 Helmets
